Septic Tanks

Septic Tanks

The most popular septic tank in the United Kingdom to date is the onion shape septic tank.

The onion shape septic tank has become the most popular due to it being highly durable and robust.
septic tank is a storage tank which holds and retains all the solid waste & passes on the untreated waste water to a soak away/drainage field.
You are not permitted to drain directly from a septic tank into a watercourse/ditch. You would need to install a sewage treatment plant.
A septic tank works by allowing the solids to settle to the bottom and the effluent to flow out. The outflow from the septic tank usually requires further treatment and this is achieved by soaking it away into the ground, where bacteria in the soil completes the sewage treatment process.
A septic tank will have some kind of baffle to separate the sludge build up from the effluent leaving the septic tank through the outlet.
At Septic Tank Supplies we are proud to offer our customers the best quality products at the cheapest prices found anywhere in the United Kingdom, which make our customers keep coming back.
In the very rare case if you find the same product cheaper else were we will try our best to price match if not better.

A Great Review From One Of Our Customers

This is a great review as the customer goes into detail about how he is making a saving on a shallow septic tank over a traditional bottle/onion septic tank.

Looked at the onion shaped septic tank and this one and have chosen this due to the large savings on the installation - Smaller digger, less time on site & no concrete required.

Many thanks for all your advice

John T

Types Of Septic Tanks

Spherical Septic Tank
The Onion shape septic tank is the most commonly used septic tank style in the UK - because of their shape they are easy to install and maintain. All these tanks come with a full instruction manual on how to install and maintain in order to prevent bad odour and deterioration of the septic tank.  Most onion shape septic tanks should be installed with a concrete surround, unlike the cylindrical Tricel tank and the Clearwater Shallow Septic Tank which can be installed with a granular backfill.
The onion shape septic tank are the cheapest option on the market for off mains drainage solutions starting at just £399.
GRP Cylindrical Septic Tank
This style of septic tank has a lower invert than most other septic tanks and a 40% lower profile than the onion shape alternative. Cylindrical septic tanks are suitable for installations in high water table areas or where the construction depth cannot be too deep, the cylindrical shape also makes this type of septic tank much easier to install.
The key benefits are;
  • No concrete required, as long as the site conditions are dry
  • Shallower installation, so less soil to remove from site and smaller digger required
  • Shallower outlet, so no need to dig long deep soakaways

Rotomold Cylindrical Low Profile Septic Tanks
These tanks are very similar to the GRP type cylindrical septic tank, these septic tanks have a very low profile but because of their strong plastic construction are ideal for DIY installations. These tanks are extremely lightweight, making them very easy to move into position without needing large machinery.
These tanks have one of the shallowest installations available to date with a total height of 1.4m for the 6 person model.

Septic Tank Bristle Filter

Why Install A Septic Tank Bristle Filter
The majority of septic tanks on the market have an internal baffle to retain the solid waste within the system and allow the effluent (dirty water) to run into a soakaway.
Over time baffles can become dislodge or damaged and this then allows the solid waste to leave the septic tank and enter the soakaway, this in tun then clogs up the soakaway and stops it from working.
How Does The Septic Tank Bristle Filter Work?
In the past the only solution when a septic tank baffle broke was to install a whole new system
With the Septic Tank Bristle Filter this is no longer the case! The Filter acts as a baffle and allows the effluent to enter the soakaway whilst containing the solids waste within the septic tank.
Installation
Installation of the Septic Tank Bristle Filter is incredibly simple and easy to install.
Simply install the Septic Tank Bristle Filter in to the vertical T on the outlet side of the septic tank or sewage treatment plant, this then removes up to 70% of suspended solids from a septic tank and 30% from a sewage treatment plants which will greatly lengthen the lifespan of your soakaway.

Use regularly as an easy-to-apply once-a-month treatment to maintain activity levels in systems. Packs contain either 6 months or 12 months’ supply of individual powder sachet treatments. They are clean and safe to handle and use, supplied in a convenient water soluble sachet for direct application into the toilet.
A correctly working system will break down solids, fats and grease faster, requiring less frequent emptying, will not give off unpleasant odours, and will have a cleaner liquid output to the drainage area / leech field / septic tank soakaway, which prevents the clogging which can create water-logged ground and unpleasant odours.
Many common household cleaning / washing products act to slow down or kill-off the normal activity of the micro- organisms found in septic tanks which are essential for correct operation. Septo Boost treatment counters this effect.

This is the complete drainage package required for up to 4 people, Inc Delivery and Vat!

What you receive;

  • Pedestrian cover and frame
  • 5 x 3 mtrs of Pollytwin (Ezy Drain)
  • 5 x 3 mtrs of Pollyagg (Ezy Drain)

We look to make buying drainage and storage tanks easy, thus allowing you to buy all the products you require for the total job application from one supplier.

Pollytwin And Pollyagg

Every septic tank and most sewage treatment plants require a soakaway. Most soakaways are constructed using shingle and drainage pipes which makes building soakaway a very timely and costly process. Pollytwin and Pollyagg (Ezy Drain) makes for a very quick and cost effective soakaway alternative.

With Pollytwin & Pollyagg soakaways you don't require any gravel or shingle. Simply dig your trench, place in the Pollyagg and then the Pollytwin on top and then simply fill in the hole with the soil you previous removed.

Pollytiwn & Pollyagg come in 3m lengths and only weigh 7kg compared to 250kg of 40mm shingle allowing the installation to be carried out by a single person.

The Pollytiwn and Pollyagg give a 30% void rather than gravel allowing for a far better dispersion of the water making the soakways life last longer.

Please call or email us if you have a larger application which require a larger storage tank and soakaway area.

Septic Tank & Cesspool Emptying

Desludging a septic tank
It is both necessary and important to have your septic tank or sewage treatment plant emptied annually to ensure proper functioning of the unit, but there are a few factors to bear in mind before having your tank or treatment plant emptied:
• Septic tanks and sewage treatment plants should never be completely emptied - there should always be a small amount of sludge left in-situ at the bottom of the tank to ensure bacteria continues to breed in the unit. This guidance applies to both septic tanks and sewage treatment plants.

• Make sure you use a reputable company to empty your tank. Most damage is done to septic tanks or sewage treatment plants during emptying by the high pressure hoses that are used in the emptying process.
At Septic Tank Supplies we can offer an emptying service second to none across the country with our recommended partners. For more information please call us on 01923 261660

Klargester Ezy Drain

Septic Tank Supplies are proud to offer the new Klargester Ezy Drain

Ezy-Drain: The most cost effective solution for a Soakaway or Drainage Field.

In recent years we have seen great advances in wastewater technology, but land drainage has remained the same for decades relying on age old traditional techniques, which are labour intensive, costly and not to say the least time consuming!

But that’s all about to change as now we can offer the 'Ezy-Drain System' - a revolutionary new product that redefines the process of dispersing water into soil easily and saving £££ in the process.

Utilising recycled synthetics packed around sectional tubes, the Ezy-Drain design offers a packaged solution which avoids the drawbacks of using loose quarried aggregates. The resultant benefits are an extremely lightweight system that can be rapidly installed without the need for specialist skills.

Ezy -Drain consists of lengths of perforated plastic pipe, embraced by a synthetic aggregate and then wrapped in a netting of polyethylene.
It comes in 3 metre sections which are easily connected by the use of standard 110mm fittings and junctions.

The synthetic aggregate is made from recycled expanded polystyrene, made to ensure the best drainage performance and at the same time keeping its form. Designed to be placed under a geo-textile membrane, Ezy- Drain is delivered ready assembled to the site where your soakaway is required.

Ezy Drain is so simple to install it can be assembled by one person on site. This asks the question why spend a fortune on shingle, pipes, labor costs and digger fuel?
Installation
  1. Dig the trench
  2. Place Ezy Drain in to trench (Extra Polyagg optional but recommended for best results)
  3. Backfill with soil and replace surface (Geotextile membrane protects soakaway from the soil)

Applications
Ezy Drain is ideal for Septic Tanks and Sewage Treatment Plants, but can also be used for surface water runoff, i.e Rainwater Harvesters

Ezy-Drain replaces the perforated pipe work of a ‘herring-bone’ drainage field. Ezy-Drain’s storage and flow characteristics typically achieve 35% more surface area than natural aggregates, resulting in enhanced water treatment capabilities and a reduction in long term clogging.

Seasonal Soakaways

Ezy-Drain is ideal to install as a ‘seasonal soakaway’ flowing from a treatment plant. A seasonal soakaway allows infiltration of treated effluent where ground conditions permit or transfers effluent to an alternative discharge point when ground conditions are unfavourable.

Benefits
  • Speed of installation – up to 4 times faster than traditional methods.
  • Lightweight increases handling capability and reduces health & safety hazards
  • Single manpower installation – less labour and plant intensive
  • Minimises site waste and disposal costs
  • Flexibility removes need for boxes or chambers
  • Ideal for sites with restricted access
  • Higher water dispersion rate than traditional methods
  • Reduced site impact - minimal reinstatement and clean up

Difference Between A Septic Tank & Cesspool

At Septic Tank Supplies we get asked daily what the difference is between a septic tank and a cesspool.

The simple answer is that a cesspool has no outlet and all the waste water is stored inside the system and needs to be emptied by a tanker, usually once a month depending on size and usage.
With a septic tank they have an outlet pipe and therefore only store the sludge and all the waste water passes on through the system and out into a soakaway. With a septic tank they are designed to be emptied annually depending on the size and usage this can be longer.

There are two types of cesspools supplied in the United Kingdom, there is domestic sized cesspool and commercial sized cesspool;

·         Domestic cesspools start at 18,000 litres and would cater for two people or a one bed room property and for every extra person another 6,800 litres needs to be added to size. Domestic cesspools are required to hold 45 days storage before requiring emptying.

·         Commercial cesspools are a little bit more tricky to size as you need to work out the flow that will be running into them. Commercial cesspools start at 2,800 litres and go right up to 79,000 litres. For help sizing a commercial cesspool please give us a call on 01923 261660.
Commercial cesspools are ideal for camp sites, caravan parks and fishing lakes.

Cesspools are usually a last resort due to the size required and the constant need for emptying, but where a site has very little area for a soakaway or a high water table there may be no other solution.

For help sizing a domestic or commercial cesspool or any other drainage product please call us on 01923 261660

Low Profile Septic Tanks

Low profile septic tanks (also known as cylindrical septic tank) have been available on the market now for just over a year and are becoming more and more popular.

The main reason more people are buying the low profile septic tank over the original onion shape septic tank is because, they are half the depth and allow smaller machinery to be able install the low profile septic tank.
Another key factor in the popularity of the low profile septic tank is, because of the shallow depth this allows for a shallower soakaway which in turn is great for areas with high water tables.

At Septic Tank Supplies we are able to offer the Clearwater shallow septic tank which is the cheapest priced shallow septic tank on the market to date. We are also able to offer the Tricel shallow septic tank, which with the right ground conditions only requires a granular backfill saving £££ on the installation.

The low profiles septic tanks have two chambers, the first chamber is there to retain the vast majority of the solid build up (sludge). The second chamber is where the water builds up and leaves the low profile septic tank and goes off to the soakaway.

At Septic Tank Supplies we are able to offer both low profile septic tanks and also low profile sewage treatment plants.

For more information on the low profile septic tank or any other drainage product or query please contact us on 01923 261660

Soakaway's

A vital part of any septic tank is its soakaway or drainage field, without this a septic tank may not be the correct option. (Sewage treatment plant or a cesspool)
Building Regulation state, soakaways should be sited so as not to have an adverse effect on the sub structure of any buildings

Apart from the Building Regulations there are various good practices regarding the positioning of a soakaway;

•    Avoid sitting within 5 metres of a road or highway.
•    Avoid sitting within 2.5 metres of a boundary.
•    Note that areas with a high water table are likely to be unsuitable.
•    Any new soakaway should not compromise existing systems.

Permeable sub-soils such as sand, along with permeable bedrock types, such as limestone, sandstone or chalk, are usually good areas to have a soakaways.
Whereas hard, igneous rocks, such as granites and basalts, and heavy soils such as clay may mean a soakaway is not going to be feasible.
There are many different type of soakaways available for septic tanks, the most common being a herringbone system.
Septic Tank Supplies are able to supply both 110mm sewage pipe and 110mm perforated pipe used in the installation of soakaways.

Design and Construction of your Soakaway
Soakaways should be always constructed with perforated pipe, and laid in trenches with the same gradient not steeper than 1:200
Pipes should be laid on a 300mm layer of shingle or medium of up to 50mm.
The trenches must be filled 50mm above perforated pipe and covered with a membrane and then filled in with soil.
The trenches for a soakaway should be between 300mm and 900mm wide with a distance of 2m between trenches.
It is recommended that an inspection chamber should be installed between the septic tank and the soakaway. (this is to make sure no solids are coming out through the outlet pipe into your soakaway)

Other Factors
Drainage fields are not to be constructed under driveways, parking areas, buildings, near
trees, dwellings, boundaries, watercourses & boreholes.

Sewage Explained

Sewage, also known as waste-water,  is water based waste that normally needs to be removed from an area.  It commonly contains physical, chemical or biological waste.  There are different types of sewage, ranging from commercial, agricultural, sanitary and surface water -waste.  Sewage is often discharged from a property through a underground drainage network.  It is then needed to be carried off to be treated before being released back into the environment. There are many different ways to treat sewage, and many countries vary their approach.

In most countries there is a national sewage system, however not all properties are connected, depending on their location.  If this is the case then you will have to install and maintain either a septic tank, sewage treatment plant or a cesspool.  Cesspools are only used as a last resort if a soak away cannot be installed.  A soak is where the treated sewage water is discharged over a large sewage area.  It consists of a network of perforated  drain pipes usually in a herringbone system, that lets the water drain naturally over a period of time back into the ground.   Most people currently prefer the sewage treatment plants, as it is better for the environment and has the option of being discharged into a watercourse with consent.

There are so many reasons we need to make sure that all forms of sewage are collected in a safe manner and then dealt with, making sure that all toxic substances are removed before the treated material is then reused. At Septic Tank Supplies we make sure all the sewage tanks we sell have been tested to the latest certification to be used in the United Kingdom.

For more information on sewage treatment or to discuss which system is best for your application please contact us on 01923 261660.
