What are Septic Tanks and how do you clean them?

A very common way to treat wastewater in both rural areas and urban systems is with a septic tank or cesspool, sometimes coupled with a filtration system added. The septic tank removes sediment and floating solids from the black water absorption system. It then filters and treats the clarified effluent from the septic tank.

Removing solids from wastewater protects the soil absorption system against clogging and premature failure. At the same time removing solid matter, the septic tank digestion also allows a portion of the solid matter to remain and stores the undigested portion.

Operation of Septic Tanks

Solids from septic tanks are removed by decantation, by stopping residual water in the tank, allowing them to sink and for the sediment layer to float away the impurities. For this separation to occur, residual water in the tank must be stopped for a minimum of 24 hours.

Up to 50 percent of the solids retained in the tank will decompose. The remaining solid matter is accumulated in the tank.

The silt continues to accumulate at the bottom of the septic tank while the septic system is used, without any intervention. Properly designed wells have a safe space for the accumulation of at least three years of silt. When the level of silt goes beyond this point, wastewater has less time to separate solids from the water before it leaves the tank, so the process stops performing effectively.
While silt levels rise, more solid material enters the filtration area. If silt accumulates too long, no separation of solids from water and sewage can occur directly in the filtration area. To prevent this, the tank must be emptied of silt, usually with a pump of a special vehicle for emptying Septic Tanks.
The deadline for emptying a septic tank depends basically on the:
  • Capacity of the septic tank
  • Amount of wastewater (related to family size)
  • Volume of solids in the wastewater

Cleaning a Septic Tank

It is highly recommended to hire a specialised company, which empties by pumping and transporting the sludge from septic tanks. This is because certain standards must be met. The resulting waste should be monitored to ensure cleaning is done properly. To remove all the material from the tank, you have to disperse the solid layer and mix the layers of silt and the liquid part of the tank to facilitate emptying as much as possible.

As usual, this is alternatively achieved by removing the water from the tank with a pump and pressure from the bottom of the tank. The septic tank should be cleaned through the central manhole and not by inspection ports, as this may damage certain parts essential for its proper functioning.

Septic Tank Supplies Supply Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park

Septic Tank Supplies have supplied Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park with a Conder 8,000l Millennium Septic Tank.

Bill Bailey

Combe Martin had a very special visitor during their recent ‘Love your Zoo’ celebrations week. More than 50 Zoos took part in the campaign which was launched in 2011 by the British and Irish Zoos Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Its aim was to encourage people to visit their local BIAZA Zoo not only for a fun day out but to learn just how much they do for conservation, education and research. Throughout the week the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park ran fun activities which included a 'love your zoo' heart trail and colouring and drawing competitions.
Bill Bailey popped in on Bank Holiday Monday to show his support for the park, a place he has visited often over the years and has even mentioned in his stage show. Bill is an avid supporter of wildlife and actively supports the WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) and the Sumatran Orangutan Society. Bill said “Zoos are great places to visit for a fun day out, but on a serious note they are also helping safeguard the future of vulnerable species. Without you, the visitor, they would be unable to do this. Support your local BIAZA Zoo and have as much fun as I did on my visit to Combe Martin today!”

Harvest Rainwater to Help the Environment

Rainwater harvesting can be an incredibly good idea, especially in Britain, where we have such a changeable climate. With plenty of wet days, the opportunity of collecting water to reuse is both rewarding and cost effective.

So why is it important that we all try and collect rain and storm water?

Let’s go back to basics - we get a lot of storm water in Britain. This can pick up rubbish, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants and flow into a storm sewer system or directly to lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and coastal waters. Everything that enters the storm sewer system is left untreated and discharged into the water bodies we use for swimming, fishing and for drinking water.

During a period of heavy rainfall in urban areas, the surfaces of streets, pavements and roofs collect excess rainwater, causing environmental problems. The flow of water and dissolved contaminants range from chemicals applied to lawns, organic animal waste and metal waste from copper, nickel and zinc roofs and cars, which are deposited in nearby rivers and streams of water. This happens because the building materials we use in today’s society doesn't allow for storm water to permeate through the ground in built up areas.

The runoff of contaminated storm water can have many adverse effects on plants, fish, animals and people, such as:
 · Sediment can cloud the water and makes it difficult or impossible the growth of aquatic plants. Sediment can also destroy aquatic habitats.
 · Excess nutrients can cause algae blooms. When the algae die, they sink to the bottom and decompose in a process that removes oxygen from the water. Fish and other aquatic organisms cannot exist in water with low dissolved oxygen levels.
· Bacteria and other pathogens can reach swimming areas and create health hazards, often making beach closures necessary.
· Rubbish such as plastic bags, bottles and cigarette butts that reach water bodies can choke, suffocate or disable aquatic species like ducks, fish, turtles and birds.
· Household hazardous wastes like insecticides, pesticides, paint, solvents and other vehicle fluids can poison aquatic life. Land animals and people can become sick or die from eating diseased fish and shellfish or ingesting polluted water.
· Polluted storm water frequently affects drinking water sources. This in turn can affect human health and increase the costs of drinking water treatment.

By harvesting rainwater in water butts, we help to allay some of these effects and can also reuse this water supply as and when we need it. Not only that, but you can help the water supply in times of drought, because you would have stocked up and also save some money on your water bills too!

Bypass Separators

Bypass Separators treat all flows which are generated by rainfall rates of up to 6.5mm/hr. This in turn means it covers over 99% of all rainfall.
Flows which are above this rate are allowed to bypass the separator. These separators are used when it is believed there is an acceptable risk not to provide full treatment for high flows. This can be explained where there is low possibility of heavy rainfall and a large spillage occur at the same time.

Surface water drains normal discharge indirectly into underground waters or to a watercourse via a soakaway. Sometimes chemicals, suspended solids and oil can contaminate the surface water affecting the discharges. This can have a serious impact on the receiving water.

There are regulations put in place and agencies i.e the Environment Agency who have published guidance on surface water disposal. These offer a range of methods of dealing with pollution both at the source and the point of discharge from site. This is called end of pipe treatment.

Sometimes there are methods in which you may not need a bypass separator. When run-off is draining from car parks and non operational areas these are classed as low risk areas. Therefore a source control approach such as an infiltration trench or permeable surfaces. This maybe a suitable means of treatment.

You can also install oil separators on surface water drainage systems. This protects the receiving water from oil pollutants which can be present due to accidental spillage or minor leaks from vehicles.

There are 2 standard types of bypass separators.
Class 1 - which is suitable for removing small droplets of oil
Class 2 - Which are suitable for dealing with discharge where a lower quality requirement applies. For example where the effluent passes to foul sewer.

A Great Review From One Of Our Customers

This is a great review as the customer goes into detail about how he is making a saving on a shallow septic tank over a traditional bottle/onion septic tank.

Looked at the onion shaped septic tank and this one and have chosen this due to the large savings on the installation - Smaller digger, less time on site & no concrete required.

Many thanks for all your advice

John T

Types Of Septic Tanks

Spherical Septic Tank
The Onion shape septic tank is the most commonly used septic tank style in the UK - because of their shape they are easy to install and maintain. All these tanks come with a full instruction manual on how to install and maintain in order to prevent bad odour and deterioration of the septic tank.  Most onion shape septic tanks should be installed with a concrete surround, unlike the cylindrical Tricel tank and the Clearwater Shallow Septic Tank which can be installed with a granular backfill.
The onion shape septic tank are the cheapest option on the market for off mains drainage solutions starting at just £399.
GRP Cylindrical Septic Tank
This style of septic tank has a lower invert than most other septic tanks and a 40% lower profile than the onion shape alternative. Cylindrical septic tanks are suitable for installations in high water table areas or where the construction depth cannot be too deep, the cylindrical shape also makes this type of septic tank much easier to install.
The key benefits are;
  • No concrete required, as long as the site conditions are dry
  • Shallower installation, so less soil to remove from site and smaller digger required
  • Shallower outlet, so no need to dig long deep soakaways

Rotomold Cylindrical Low Profile Septic Tanks
These tanks are very similar to the GRP type cylindrical septic tank, these septic tanks have a very low profile but because of their strong plastic construction are ideal for DIY installations. These tanks are extremely lightweight, making them very easy to move into position without needing large machinery.
These tanks have one of the shallowest installations available to date with a total height of 1.4m for the 6 person model.
