A project at a sewage treatment works has been shortlisted for two national awards.

The Somerton Reedbed Project, which removes phosphorous through biochemical reactions between waste water, metal-rich materials and reeds, has been shortlisted in the Green Business Awards in the Green Technology category, which recognises initiatives or products which deliver sustainability benefits.

The scheme has also been shortlisted for a Green Apple Environmental Award, an international campaign which promotes environmental best practice around the world.

Excessive levels of phosphorus in watercourses cause an imbalance in the natural ecosystem, promoting excessive algal growth and devastating aquatic life. The trial at Wessex Water's Somerton sewage works commenced in 2010 to find a sustainable way to remove phosphorus from treated sewage effluent.

Currently, in order to meet strict legal requirements, the firm removes phosphorus from waste water using a traditional process which involves costly chemicals transported from Eastern Europe and South America. The treated effluent is then returned to rivers.

Now a modified reedbed with a different substrate removes phosphorus without the use of additional chemicals or energy.

EN-12566-3 2005 Explained

EN12566-3 2005 is the new customary certificate for sewage treatment plants that are sold within Europe. The construction of products Regulations from 1991 now state that any sewage treatment plant that are sold within the EU must have the subsequent specifications -

1)  Should be a hundred per cent watertight

2)  The sewage treatment plant has to be structurally sound 

3)  Must have the correct capacity to hold waste water for an enough time before needing to be emptied. This allows a maximum period of time for the sewage to be treated, for this reason the discharge will be cleaner and therefore more environment friendly.

All of these necessities are complying with the British Environment Agency commandments, which is not optional. All manufacturers and suppliers in the United Kingdom need to be able to prove that the sewage treatment plant that they sell are compliable with the regulation set out by the British Environmental Agency. If a sewage treatment plant has not been tested to EN12566-3 2005 you should stay well clear as the Environmental Agency will not allow this system to be installed and if found out would be well in their right to issue a very large fine.

The British Standard Institute  said that they only want sewage treatment plants with a EN12566-3 2005 Certificate on the United Kingdom market.  The Environment Agency have also said that only sewage treatment plants that have the EN 12566-3 2005 Certificate are allowed to obtain the Environment Agency Exemption Certificate which you have to apply for.

Because these restrictions apply to all of Europe you will be unable to import an inferior sewage treatment plant from mainland Europe. 

Although the EN 12566-3 has very high guidelines and tests, it requires only a percentage reduction of the sewage effluent and therefore it does not guarantee that the final effluent will please the Environment Agency consent standards that must be satisfied, because of this at Septic Tank Supplies we are happy to offer a wide range of sewage treatment plants all certificated to EN 12566-3 2005.

Sewage Explained

Sewage, also known as waste-water,  is water based waste that normally needs to be removed from an area.  It commonly contains physical, chemical or biological waste.  There are different types of sewage, ranging from commercial, agricultural, sanitary and surface water -waste.  Sewage is often discharged from a property through a underground drainage network.  It is then needed to be carried off to be treated before being released back into the environment. There are many different ways to treat sewage, and many countries vary their approach.

In most countries there is a national sewage system, however not all properties are connected, depending on their location.  If this is the case then you will have to install and maintain either a septic tank, sewage treatment plant or a cesspool.  Cesspools are only used as a last resort if a soak away cannot be installed.  A soak is where the treated sewage water is discharged over a large sewage area.  It consists of a network of perforated  drain pipes usually in a herringbone system, that lets the water drain naturally over a period of time back into the ground.   Most people currently prefer the sewage treatment plants, as it is better for the environment and has the option of being discharged into a watercourse with consent.

Tricel Sewage Treatment Plants - French Market

When BS Standards EN12566-3, was introduced only treatment systems that have received European Certification can be installed.

The waste is treated through a mechanical aeration process. The level of treatment achieved enables the effluent to be discharged into a watercourse subject to receiving the relevant consent to discharge from the local regulatory bodies such as the Environment Agency for England and Wales, Scottish Environment Agency for Scotland and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency for Northern Ireland.

Domestic sewage treatment plants have been in the UK for around 25 years, One of the first being the Klargester BioDisc which was first introduced back in 1974.


Sewage treatment plants are used in areas where there is no mains drainage and are used to convert raw sewage effluent into a purer state. This means that the sewage effluent from your sewage treatment plant can legally be discharged into lakes, rivers, soil and streams with permission from the Environmental Agency.

How the sewage treatment plant works.

All household waste from sinks, baths, showers and toilets leave the property and enter into the sewage treatment plant.

1) The first compartment is where all the sewage waste enters.  It is called the primary holding tank.
From this first compartment all the liquid slowly drains off into the second compartment.
The majority of the solid waste remains in this first compartment.
Because of this, the sewage treatment will need desludging at frequent intervals, usually sewage treatment plants are designed to give one year’s storage in domestic applications.
2) The second compartment of the sewage treatment plant is where the treatment process begins.
It is here that all the micro biological organisms live.  Over time they break down the sewage effluent.  From here the sewage effluent is discharged into the third compartment.
3) The third compartment is where the treated effluent is discharged from the sewage treatment plant into your desired location.

Sewage treatment plants are much preferred and more likely to be accepted by the Environmental Agency to the common septic tank due to the treatment of the waste water leaving the system. The treated effluent from sewage treatment plants are up to 98% cleaner than raw sewage and therefore environmentally friendly.

Septic tanks act only as a holding tank for the solid waste and no treatment is achieved in the system itself, thus the Environmental Agency prefer the installation of a sewage treatment plant.

Sewage treatment plants work by one of two ways;

The most common would generally have an air compressor above ground which pumps air into the sewage treatment plant. The biomass (bacteria) which breaks down the sewage needs oxygen to live and aids in the digestion process.

The second way is feeding the oxygen into the sewage treatment plant without the need of an external air compressor. This is done by using rotating discs inside the tank to act as a medium for supporting the bacteria which carries out the aerobic treatment process. As the internal discs rotate it draws air into the system.
