The labour-intensive, costly and time-consuming activity of installing traditional herring-bone drainage soakaways for septic tanks and sewage treatment plants could now be a thing of the past.

Ezy-Drain, which has just been launched in the UK by Klargester, is a new type of pipe system that is lightweight, easy to use, high-performance and environmentally friendly.

The system was developed in the USA more than 20 years ago and, since then, more than 200,000 have been successfully installed across North America*.

Ezy-Drain comprises of sections of perforated plastic pipe, which are surrounded by a synthetic aggregate wrapped in polyethylene netting. Each three-metre section of pipe is joined together quite simply by the use of click-fit connectors, protected by a preformed collar.

The result is an extremely lightweight system that can be quickly installed by a single person up to four times faster than any time-honoured, gravel-based solution without the need for aggregate or specialist skills. The only manual labour involved is the backfilling of the trenches prior to operation.

The synthetic aggregate is manufactured from recycled expanded polystyrene, engineered to deliver for optimum performance while consistently retaining its form.

'There are so many advantages to using this tried-and-tested system over traditional gravel-filled soakaways that it's quite hard to know where to start,' says Kevin Roe, UK Sales Manager for Klargester.

'The storage and flow characteristics of the synthetic aggregate mean it's more effective at treating effluent and there's less chance of it getting clogged up.

'The cost of installation is also vastly reduced thanks not only to the speed of installation, but also because of the need for only one operative and minimal plant. There's no waiting around on site for a delivery of materials, and there's no issue with access for delivery lorries.

Every septic tank and most sewage treatment plants require a soakaway. Most soakaways are constructed using shingle and drainage pipes which makes building soakaway a very timely and costly process. Pollytwin and Pollyagg (Ezy Drain) makes for a very quick and cost effective soakaway alternative.

With Pollytwin & Pollyagg soakaways you don't require any gravel or shingle. Simply dig your trench, place in the Pollyagg and then the Pollytwin on top and then simply fill in the hole with the soil you previous removed.

Pollytiwn & Pollyagg come in 3m lengths and only weigh 7kg compared to 250kg of 40mm shingle allowing the installation to be carried out by a single person.

The Pollytiwn and Pollyagg give a 30% void rather than gravel allowing for a far better dispersion of the water making the soakways life last longer.

Utilising recycled synthetics packed around sectional tubes, the Ezy-Drain design offers a packaged solution which avoids the drawbacks of using loose quarried aggregates. The resultant benefits are an extremely lightweight system that can be rapidly installed without the need for specialist skills.


Ezy -Drain consists of lengths of perforated plastic pipe, embraced by a synthetic aggregate and then wrapped in a netting of polyethylene.
It comes in 3 metre sections which are easily connected by the use of standard 110mm fittings and junctions.

The synthetic aggregate is made from recycled expanded polystyrene, made to ensure the best drainage performance and at the same time keeping its form. Designed to be placed under a geo-textile membrane, Ezy- Drain is delivered ready assembled to the site where your soakaway is required.

Ezy Drain is so simple to install it can be assembled by one person on site. This asks the question why spend a fortune on shingle, pipes, labor costs and digger fuel?
Installation

1. Dig the trench
2. Place Ezy Drain in to trench (Extra Polyagg optional but recommended for best results)
3. Backfill with soil and replace surface (Geotextile membrane protects soakaway from the soil)

Applications
Ezy Drain is ideal for Septic Tanks and Sewage Treatment Plants, but can also be used for surface water runoff, i.e Rainwater Harvesters

Ezy-Drain replaces the perforated pipe work of a ‘herring-bone’ drainage field. Ezy-Drain’s storage and flow characteristics typically achieve 35% more surface area than natural aggregates, resulting in enhanced water treatment capabilities and a reduction in long term clogging.

Seasonal Soakaways

Ezy-Drain is ideal to install as a ‘seasonal soakaway’ flowing from a treatment plant. A seasonal soakaway allows infiltration of treated effluent where ground conditions permit or transfers effluent to an alternative discharge point when ground conditions are unfavourable.
