You may have heard of the name, maybe someone referred to your sewage system as a BioDisc or a Klargester.

Klargester has become a household name to many just like we refer to our vacuum cleaner as a Hoover but just like Hoover Klargester isn’t the only manufacturer that produces the goods there are many others, even so Klargester where the first so lets have a look at its flagship product the BioDisc.

Why is it different?

The Klargester BioDisc is the only sewage treatment plant to use the Rotating Biological Contactor technology, it still uses the three stage treatment method (sludge retention-treatment-setlement) but in the treatment area (2nd stage) stead of using a compressor or small pump to oxygenate the effluent it uses the rotating disks.

Cons

The Biodisc has in the past had a bad reputation for poor reliability but this is mostly been because of householders not maintaining the plant adequately causing main components to breakdown, an other issue can be shoddy installation, if the Biodisc is setup wrong the tank can become prone to break drive belts and bearings can wear out very quickly.

The other problem for some people can be the visual impact of the tank as it has a large lid that can’t be covered over easily as it is the main access hatch to the treatment plant

Pros

Klargester has been manufacturing the BioDisc for decades now the plant has been improved over the years and it isn’t Klargester’s flagship product for nothing, all in it is a well made reliable product yes it needs to be maintained regularly and has a big lid but many contractors will not install anything else, it is one of the most used treatment plants in the UK and Ireland that must stand for something.

Should I buy one?

If you are on a budget the answer would be no as the BioDisc is a premium product with a premium price tag, there are other sewage treatment plants that are much more cost effective and just as reliable, but if you want to tap in to Klargester's years of experience in the sewage industry and have the budget to allow it the Klargester BioDisc is for you.

The all new Conder ASP HDPE

The all new Conder ASP HDPE (High Density Polyurethane) Sewage Treatment Plant

HDPE or High Density Polyurethane seems to be coming ever more popular as a material used in the construction industry for underground tanks whether they are oil, sewage or water it is becoming the go to material, why?

High Density Polyurethane is a very robust and durable material it has a very high strength to density ratio and is normal a recycled product so there is no wonder Conder is using it in their new ASP HDPE range Sewage Treatment Plant.

So is it any good? Yes it is, the cleaver thing Conder has done is they have built on the success of the ASP range instead of producing a new model with their inherent teething problems, The New ASP is the same as the old model but using HDPE it also has a nice addition of the concealed blower housing inside the neck of the tank instead of having to have a external box.

The New ASP also has two riser options one a telescopic riser that goes from 50mm to 300mm and then a fixed 800mm riser also making the ASP HDPE more versatile for installation than the previous model also.

Sewage pumping stations

Sewage pumping stations, or pump stations, are factory built sewage solutions made from a GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) and polyethylene chamber. These are easy to install and require little maintenance.

Sewage pumping stations are ideal where the main sewer is accessible but is placed at a higher level to, or some distance from, the domestic foul drain – that is to say, where draining your sewage by gravity is not possible. These stations therefore pump the sewage closer towards the sewer.

Some of the applications for which sewage pumping stations can be used include domestic sewage pumping, as pump sets for sewage treatment plants, 24-hour storage chambers and other bespoke systems. When installed after a septic tank, pump stations can also be used to disperse settled effluent in a water tank, pumping it up to an inspection chamber where it can then flow to a draining stage in the usual way.  

The number of stations needed often depends on the size of the building. Single pump units are usually sufficient for individual houses, while twin pumping systems are more suitable for multiple dwellings.

Types of Pumping stations

The sewage pumping stations we stock are available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 200L for a small dwelling to a 1600L for properties up to 13 people. The Klargester standard 200L pump station can pump a 2m lift to a distance of 450m or a maximum of 6m lift over a distance of 60m, while the Zoeller Mini can achieve up to a 10m lift.

The Klargester pump station comes complete with float switches, a non-return valve and a compression coupling. An A-Pak High Water Alarm System is a helpful accessory for any pumping station, ensuring that sewage does not build up excessively in the event that the pump fails.

As the company’s long reigning flagship product, the Conder ASP Sewage Treatment Plant was launched in HDPE material in the summer of last year and has now been further improved to include an integral final effluent discharge pump system.

Eliminating the need for a separate pumping station to be installed downstream of the drainage, the new enhanced product will now allow the installer to overcome common obstacles or whereby site conditions means that gravity discharge would be difficult or - in a lot of cases - impossible.

Retail Outlet’s Popularity Spurs New Treatment System

The UK’s leading luxury Scottish country clothing specialist – The House of Bruar – has had a new sewage treatment plant installed by Premier Tech Aqua in order to cope with the retail outlet’s increasing customer volumes. 

Based in Perthshire, the House of Bruar is a luxury clothing retailer, well known for sourcing clothing from world renowned manufacturers. But with growing footfall the system the company had in place was inefficient to cope with the strain.

The House of Bruar - open eight hours per day is an extremely busy retail outlet which can sometimes be visited by around 13,300 people per day - over a three-day period on a sale weekend – along with a number of staff who resides at the property. And so, a solution was provided to install Premier Tech Aqua’s Conder SAF1000N10 Multi Stream Sewage Treatment Plant.

With the new multi stream 1000 PE plant in place, the equivalent to 1000 domestic users can be served, making it an ideal solution to cope with the high volume of visitors to the outlet. And in an innovative way to keep installation costs to an absolute minimum, the House of Bruar was able to use the spare gravel from its own site as backfill once the tank was installed, eliminating the need to place the tanks into concrete.
