Klargester's Newest Sewage Treatment Plant Now Available

New commercial sewage treatment plant from Kingspan Klargester

Kingspan Klargester have been investing in its commercial range and along with the recent Biodisc BM, are happy to introduce the new BioFicient sewage treatment plant for commercial applications.
In a standard configuration, the Bioficient Commercial will deliver BOD levels of less than 20mg/l, 30mg/l Suspended Solids, and Ammonia levels lower than 5mg/l. This means it will outperform most of the packaged systems currently on the market for nitrogen reduction.
The Bioficient is also a highly adaptable solution that can manage a range of influent and effluent qualities, depending on the situation requirements. The system may be configured to enable treatment to almost any consent level levied by the regulators.
The BioFicient is designed in accordance with BS EN 12255 and ideal for large domestic and commercial applications such as camp sites, hotels or industrial units. It is shipped as a single piece tank up to 300PE with modular systems available for up to 1000 PE.
How Bioficient Commercial Works
Bioficient Commerical delivers superior effluent quality thanks to its three-stage process, featuring an innovative plug flow aerobic process in a fluidised bed arrangement. This operates in conjunction with an advanced system of air diffusers and media to deliver optimum levels of purification.
Bioficient features three phases to ensure efficient operation. The first stage is a settlement phase where the coarse solids are retained for subsequent gradual breakdown. The biological phase removes carbonaceous pollutants by presenting the sewage to micro-organisms in the presence of oxygen. High efficiency air diffusers continually pump oxygen through the biological media and fluidised effluent. The by-product of biological treatment, humus sludge, is re-cycled for further treatment.
An innovative flow management system stabilises influent volume variations and minimises hydraulic impact on the final settlement process.
All these control procedures ensure that the final effluent remains at a consistently high quality.
Changes to the Bioficient Commercial
The improvements that have been introduced with the rebranding include:
  • GRP inspection covers for increased corrosion protection.
  • Vent pipes added to every neck to allow better ventilation and air-flow.
  • Necks on each side of the primary settlement tank to allow for better inspection and easier de-sludging.
  • Biozones are now very similar in volume to aid maintenance.
  • Inlet pipe has a rodding point inside the neck for easier access.
  • A more efficient blower means less power consumption.
  • More airflow to diffusers to improve process.
  • Stainless-steel diffusers to avoid corrosion.
  • Other Made To Order options are available.
Other Benefits
Furthermore, the design allows the system to be installed in both pedestrian- and traffic-loading areas ensuring flexibility to installers and minimal land-take (subject to civil design and covers fitted).
Our technical specialists and engineers are able to assess each site’s demands and tailor the specification accordingly. Plant sizing is calculated not only on current demand but also on potential future loading to meet the latest legislative criteria.

Klargester BioDisc Review

Klargester BioDisc 6 Person
Klargester BioDisc
You may have heard of the name, maybe someone referred to your sewage system as a BioDisc or a Klargester.
Klargester has become a household name to many just like we refer to our vacuum cleaner as a Hoover but just like Hoover Klargester isn’t the only manufacturer that produces the goods there are many others, even so Klargester where the first so lets have a look at its flagship product the BioDisc.
Why is it different?
The Klargester BioDisc is the only sewage treatment plant to use the Rotating Biological Contactor technology, it still uses the three stage treatment method (sludge retention-treatment-setlement) but in the treatment area (2nd stage) stead of using a compressor or small pump to oxygenate the effluent it uses the rotating disks.
Cons
The Biodisc has in the past had a bad reputation for poor reliability but this is mostly been because of householders not maintaining the plant adequately causing main components to breakdown, an other issue can be shoddy installation, if the Biodisc is setup wrong the tank can become prone to break drive belts and bearings can wear out very quickly.
The other problem for some people can be the visual impact of the tank as it has a large lid that can’t be covered over easily as it is the main access hatch to the treatment plant
Pros
Klargester has been manufacturing the BioDisc for decades now the plant has been improved over the years and it isn’t Klargester’s flagship product for nothing, all in it is a well made reliable product yes it needs to be maintained regularly and has a big lid but many contractors will not install anything else, it is one of the most used treatment plants in the UK and Ireland that must stand for something.
Should I buy one?
If you are on a budget the answer would be no as the BioDisc is a premium product with a premium price tag, there are other sewage treatment plants that are much more cost effective and just as reliable, but if you want to tap in to Klargester's years of experience in the sewage industry and have the budget to allow it the Klargester BioDisc is for you.

Klargester BioDisc 25 Person

Klargester BioDisc 25 Person
(This unit is EPP2 Certified and conforms to the EN12566-3)
The only treatment plant that utilises the biological contactor (RBC) technology to produce outstanding wastewater treatment results.
For domestic properties with no access to mains drainage, the Klargester BioDisc® gives you a reliable, efficient and Eco safe solution for your sewage disposal needs.
This unit is just the job for properties where discharge is to underground irrigation, or to a local watercourse where approved by the local Regulator, and where a septic system will not meet the standards required.
Certified to European Standard EN 12566 - Part 3 - Annexe B - Performance Tests
In 2005, the Klargester BioDisc® underwent 40 weeks of stringent testing to assess its treatment efficiency as part of Klargester's commitment to meet the new European Standard for small treatment plants. After delivering exceptionally high levels of pollution removal (95%) under varying loads and conditions, the Klargester BioDisc® was awarded its Performance Certificate.
The test report also highlighted the following benefits and advantages of the BioDisc:
•         The Klargester BioDisc® operates without noise or odour.
•         Maintenance requirements are low with good access.
•         No technical or mechanical faults.
•         Low power consumption at 1.3kw/d - approx 10-14 pence per day.
•         Low sludge build up and large storage capacity.
Unique Design

The Klargester BioDisc® is the only packaged sewage treatment plant using Rotating Biological Contactor technology for domestic applications. This process offers low cost and high performance benefits with low carbon emissions.

Assured Performance
Klargester BioDisc® is a very high performance sewage treatment plant that, in standard domestic homes, will produce wastewater qualities of better than 15mg/l BOD*, 25mg/l SS and 15mg/l ammonia.

*Wastewater from sewage treatment plants contains organic materials that are decomposed by microorganisms, which make use of oxygen in the process – the amount of oxygen consumed by these organisms in breaking down the waste is known as the ‘biochemical oxygen demand’ or BOD.
Low Running Costs

Klargester BioDisc® has the lowest operational and maintenance costs of any sewage treatment plant in its field. The single home unit needs a yearly de-sludge only, the motor rating is 50 watts and routine maintenance is minimal.
Low Lifetime Costs
Lowest running costs with the quality of build and strength of the equipment - mainly the drive motor that has a much longer service life than the pumps and compressors fitted to other units - all add up to a lower lifetime cost for the Klargester BioDisc®.
Process Stability
The Klargester BioDisc® is known for its treatment performance. This is further enhanced by Klargester’s Managed Flow System, which ensures great performance by smoothing peak flows and buffering biological loads over the working day.
Dispersal
Subject to relevant authority consent and site conditions, the plant discharge can be to a watercourse or to a drainage field.
Standard Invert Options
Three standard drain invert level alternatives are available from us to match the site topography and where applicable, minimise the invert depth. The Klargester BA, BA-X and BB BioDiscs are available with 450mm, 750mm and 1,250mm inverts
BA, BA-X and BB BioDisc’s can also be fitted with an integrated pump to move wastewater from point of treatment if site levels demand this.

New Rules For Using Septic Tanks & Small Sewage Treatment Plants

As of January 2015, you, as a homeowner, are now responsible for your choice, installation and maintenance of your wastewater system under a new code of practice introduced by the Environment Agency. You have a legal responsibility to minimise the impact of your sewage waste if you manage it within the bounds of your property e.g. with a septic tank or sewage treatment plant.

How to follow the rules and protect your local environment

  • We strongly advise you always get expert, specialist advice when it comes to sewage waste treatment; the effluent has the potential to be both a serious health hazard and pollute the local environment if it is not properly managed. You are also at risk of prosecution if the regulations are not upheld.
  • Although you no longer need to register a small domestic tank or keep five year maintenance records, your septic tank or sewage treatment plant must still be fit for purpose, comply with industry standard EN 12566, and be properly sized, installed, and maintained by an authorised person [ie. a professionally qualified installer].
  • You are limited to discharging a maximum of 2,000 litres of treated sewage per day into the ground or 5,000 litres of treated sewage per day to flowing water. If you discharge more you will need a permit.
  • Never neglect your wastewater system; out of sight is not out of mind! Like boilers and cars, septic tanks and sewage treatment plants need to be regularly serviced to operate efficiently.
  • If you have a septic tank that discharges directly to a surface water you will need to replace or upgrade your treatment system by 1 January 2020, or when you sell your property if before this date.

Trust the experts

It is now more important than ever to take care when it comes to your choice of tank. At Septic Tank Supplies we can offer the following;
  • initial consultation/assessment of needs
  • premium products
  • free site inspection
  • installation by our professional accredited installers
  • reliable and cost effective
  • after-sales service

Despite their high efficiency rating, treatment plants don’t cost significantly more to buy and install than a septic tank and require a smaller drainage field while maintenance and running costs are relatively low. However minor the impact on the environment, any serious problem caused by a failed septic tank or sewage treatment plant can have a major impact on the finances of the system’s owner.
Septic tanks and sewage treatment plants should never be considered a fit and forget solution – regulations require that they are maintained and emptied regularly, so it is important to trust professional service team to look after your wastewater system.
