Septic Tank Bristle Filter

Septic tank filters prevent up to 70% of all suspended solids escaping from the tank into the soakaway.  This helps to protect the soakaway from blockages and clogging.  Our septic tank filters are slot filters.  They simply push into the vertical part of the 'T' piece on the septic tank outlet pipe.

Septic tank soakaways have a lifespan that is limited by the amount of suspended solids - little bits that float around - in the  liquid that comes out of the tank. They are made up of hair, seeds, lint, floating organic matter, etc. The smaller the soakaway soil particles, (soils with clay or silt as part of their structure) the smaller the air spaces in the soil and the faster they block with these suspended solids. Septic tank filters trap these particles and prevent them from clogging the soakaway soil. See the picture opposite. All these particles have been trapped. This filter had been in use for 3 months only. Specification Easy installation just about anywhere. This cleaning interval depends on how the system is used. High fat content discharged into the foul drains will dramatically increase the need for cleaning, as will the use of antibacterial products and excess detergents. It is recommended that the filter be cleaned every time the tank is pumped as a minimum. Check the filter every month. Do not use plumbing whilst the effluent filter is removed. Use the maintenance sleeve (shown opposite) to prevent effluent exiting the settlement tank whilst the filter is absent. Pull the effluent filter out of the tee. Hose off filter over the septic tank. Make sure all solids fall back into septic tank. Insert filter back into tee/housing. These effluent filters push into the vertical part of the outlet pipe in the settlement tank to prevent solids from exiting the tank and clogging the soakaway.

How it works

A septic tank is a separation system, where the clarified effluent is discharged:

1.     Raw sewage enters the first stage of the tank where solids settle by gravity to the bottom of the tank

2.     Sludge levels reduce within this stage with the aid of naturally occurring anaerobic digestion

3.     The flow passes upwards through further baffle arrangements providing further clarification

4.     The settled effluent is displaced from the tank by the incoming sewage flow

5.     The partially treated effluent then flows into the percolation area or other suitable filter bed system. 

6.     Sludges built up in the base of the septic tank are emptied annually to ensure continued efficient running

Here are some images that show the scale, flexibility and the quality of the new flat, flexible Graf Platin rainwater harvesting tank. As you can see this rainwater harvesting tank could not be much less complicated.

The Platin flat rainwater tank was specially developed for rainwater harvesting. It is available in sizes of between 1500 and 5000 litres. Platin features a minimum installation depth which translates into a shorter installation time and lower installation costs.

Dig a shallow hole with a flat base to suit the tank size. Use a ground sheet for the spoil- you'll need some of it to refill.	Carry the Platin to the hole - its not that heavy - may need a couple of mates for the largest tank size.	Lower the tank into  position - connect up to the household rainwater downpipes and cut a soak-away for the overflow - preferably connected to the drainage system.	Fit the filter, pump and fill in the hole then secure the cover carefully so only an adult can remove it...	..and you are watering the garden in no time! The pump with our garden kit shown far below is pressure sensitive and will pump rainwater when you turn on the tap.
