Benefits Of Storing Rainwater

Rainwater harvesting is the practice of collecting and using rainwater being discharged from hard surfaces such as ceilings or floors. It is an ancient technique that is regaining popularity now that more and more people are looking for ways to use water resources more intelligently.

Today, many rural areas depend on harvesting rainwater, but urban areas that are more or less exclusively served by utility companies, tend to forget this resource. Rainwater harvesting is an important solution, especially in the big cities where they are spending more water than is actually available. A problem that this is also exacerbating is the transformations to the environment and how climate change is occurring.

Capturing Rainwater
In order to capture rainwater, it is necessary that the surface or ‘runoff’ that is exposed to storm water permit allow its collection. This can happen either because the surface is impermeable or because its absorptive capacity is less than the infiltration on slopes.

In urban centres, areas exposed to rain are mostly impervious (roofs, roads and parking), so uptake can be performed with relatively small investments. Driving the water into runoff storage is usually performed by gutters on roofs (linked to siphon drains), pipe sheet and / or PVC gutters with or without grids in the floors.

Key benefits of rainwater harvesting:

Economic
Rainwater is a free and easy resource to maintain. It is also relatively clean and can be used in a whole host of different ways and activities that do not (health, to wash surfaces, vehicles or clothing, watering gardens or crops, among other possibilities).
Harvesting it can lead to a saving on bills of piped drinking water by the reduction in use.

Environmental
Collecting rainwater helps the conservation of reserves of drinking water, such as our rivers, lakes, and other wetlands.
It also fosters a culture of conservation and highlights an optimal use of water.

Social
It decreases the volume of rain water entering the drainage system combined (both sanitary and storm water), thereby avoiding flooding and reducing the volume of sewage discharges. This then increases their availability for other uses.

Harvesting this way reduces the use of energy and chemicals needed to treat rainwater in the city, also decreasing the amount of expenditures generated and helping with the treatment of other areas of focus. Overall, rainwater collection is very cheap and simple to get up and running, even for domestic home owners, so start harvesting today!

Septic Tank Supplies Supply Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park

Septic Tank Supplies have supplied Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park with a Conder 8,000l Millennium Septic Tank.

Bill Bailey

Combe Martin had a very special visitor during their recent ‘Love your Zoo’ celebrations week. More than 50 Zoos took part in the campaign which was launched in 2011 by the British and Irish Zoos Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Its aim was to encourage people to visit their local BIAZA Zoo not only for a fun day out but to learn just how much they do for conservation, education and research. Throughout the week the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park ran fun activities which included a 'love your zoo' heart trail and colouring and drawing competitions.
Bill Bailey popped in on Bank Holiday Monday to show his support for the park, a place he has visited often over the years and has even mentioned in his stage show. Bill is an avid supporter of wildlife and actively supports the WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) and the Sumatran Orangutan Society. Bill said “Zoos are great places to visit for a fun day out, but on a serious note they are also helping safeguard the future of vulnerable species. Without you, the visitor, they would be unable to do this. Support your local BIAZA Zoo and have as much fun as I did on my visit to Combe Martin today!”

How Can You Make Your House Eco Friendly?

The commitment to the environment is essential and a good way to do it, is to build green homes.
It seems that there is a greater awareness by the public about the need to respect and protect the environment than ever before. Given this, green homes have boomed in the last decade. Here are some pointers on how to make a green home for yourself.

1.  Natural Resources. Most importantly, make the most of the sun to generate hot water, heat buildings and use all hours of light to promote natural lighting throughout the house.

Other resources such as wind and air can be harnessed for cooling buildings in the hottest months. The rain can also be harnessed, for example with water supplies for irrigation and, in addition, you can turn it into drinking water by domestic purifiers. These consist of passing water through a semi permeable membrane to filter contaminants such as particles, heavy metals, excess salts, toxic substances, viruses, insecticides, etc.

2. Manufacture and recycling. The materials used in the manufacture of a green home are maximised and the use of recycled and recyclable materials are promoted. Also, keep in mind that many of the building materials can be recovered, so rebuilding a building can be simple.

3. Materials and construction. One of the most important features in making sustainable homes is that the materials for their production have used the least amount of energy. Additionally, buildings are constructed with minimal energy consumption, since the components of the building are prefabricated.

4. Reusing materials. Another great advantage of building houses green is that all materials used can - after the end of the lifetime of a house - be repaired and used in another building.

5. Harnessing natural energy. By implementing solar thermal and photovoltaic solar collectors (to generate electricity), and geothermal systems (to generate hot air and water), these modern houses gain the advantage of all the natural energy offered by the environment. Thus, thanks to these technologies, the buildings are heated in winter for themselves. In summer, buildings stay cool without air conditioning too.

6. Lighting by LEDs. LED technology is another great ally of sustainable homes. If your house is organic, use LEDs for illumination. This allows less risk to the environment.

Building a green home takes time because it requires a detailed study of the characteristics of the environment and the possibilities it offers. However, the result is very satisfying and, above all, very supportive of the environment.

We have a range of non electric sewage treatments plants which are for the eco-friendly amongst us.. If you need any further information please call 01923 261660.

WPL Diamond DMS

Sewage Treatment for the Home Diamond-3D-Redered-cut-away.jpg

Domestic Sewage Treatment DiamondSewage treatment plant for
1 - 20 people

The WPL Diamond range offers sewage treatment plants for properties that are not connected to mains drainage.  The DMS range includes a range of sizes suitable for 1-20 people.

Why Diamond?

There are several key reasons to choose a Diamond wastewater solution for your development:
  • Minimal maintenance, low running cost - unlike other sewage treatment plants on the market, the Diamond’s unique design has no internal moving parts.  This means that it requires minimal annual maintenance, making it economical to run.
  • Kind to the environment – the Diamond’s treatment process requires no chemicals, so it’s kind to the environment.
  • Minimal visual impact – the Diamond’s tank is buried entirely underground, so it has minimal visual impact.
  • No smells – most other treatment plants have primary tanks which store settled solids and can emit odours.  The Diamond has no primary tank and is therefore odour-free.
  • Long emptying cycle – the Diamond’s continuous bacterial digestion treats wastewater to a standard that meets all normal Environment Agency consents.  This treatment process can achieve a de-sludge (emptying) period of up to three years – much longer than that of most other plants.

Process Performance Guaranteed

The Diamond treats wastewater to a 95 percentile standard of:
  • 20mg/l Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)
  • 30mg/l Suspended Solids (SS)
  • 20mg/l Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AMM-N)
If more stringent environmental requirements are specified, please contact WPL on 02392 242 600

How does the Diamond treatment plant work?

  • Wastewater enters the Diamond via the inlet pipe directly into the central aeration chamber (1)
  • The central aeration chamber (1) empties into the bottom of the outer clarifier chamber (2).
  • A drop pipe (7) releases air through a disc plate diffuser (4).
  • An upward flow of process fluid draws settled solids (5) through the draft tube (3) to discharge at the surface of the aeration chamber.
  • The design of the draft tube (3) ensures complete mixing of oxygen with the sewage. Oxygenation allows aerobic organisms, that biologically degrade wastewater contaminants, to grow.
  • Gravity causes aerated solids to settle at the tank bottom (5) where they are drawn back up through the draft tube (3).
  • Raw sewage displaces biological solids (8)from the aeration chamber (1) to the clarifier chamber (2). Quiescent conditions in the clarifier allow digested solids to settle at the base (5) and  return to the aeration chamber (1).
  • The clarified effluent flows up through the scum baffle (9) and over the weir arrangement (6) prior to discharge via the outlet pipe.
